The Path of Confusion
January 13, 2011 by admin
Confusion is a familiar feeling for most of us. It is a totally natural phenomenon. In this sense, it is not a problem. But, we often suffer unnecessarily when we feel confused – especially if the contents of our quandary has to do with seemingly pivotal life matters. This suffering comes from grasping. Confusion is an amorphous, intangible, mysterious state. Often, we label the feelings that come with it as discomfort, fear and anxiety. So, we grope in the darkness of confusion for the light switch of clarity. Suffering from confusion comes from resisting this open, unknowable state and trying to force a solution before the time is right.
In doing so what we tend to reach for is premature. We rob ourselves of the experience of being in the dark by hurrying for the lights. Confusion, though, can be a beautiful thing. Even if we don’t go so far as to say that we can “enjoy” it, we can at least appreciate it. If we let ourselves linger in it for a bit longer and remind ourselves to relax, breathe and open to the energy of potential, we can touch more deeply the wisdom of this mysterious state.
Next time we feel confused let’s try something different. Lot’s of “spiritual” advice would say, “do nothing.” But, that’s not very practical. So, instead, let’s remember to get out of our heads and really feel into our bodies. Noticing the breath filling and emptying from the abdomen is a good way to anchor ourselves. Then, every time a “solution” to our confusion arises as an idea, let’s try letting it go and coming back to the body.
Relax deeper into yourself and prompt yourself with a question like, “What does this darkness and confusion have to show me?” But, don’t accept the answer. Keep asking, and keep relaxing. Follow the trail that this energy will lead you on. Be patient. And not to be corny, but be brave… often the most important things for us to know are hidden beneath feelings of fear. You might be surprised that you may actually experience a rapid heart-beat, or “butterflies” in your stomach when you are on to something juicy. Remind yourself that everything is fine, consciously relax and remember your breath. Keep letting answers go until one arises that is more than just an idea, but rather, it resonates also in your heart and in your gut.
The “answer” may not resemble anything that has to do with the “issues” you were originally confused about, or it could clarify them completely. It could make perfect sense in a totally illogical way or it could even come in the form of another question and more confusion. If so, this is great, repeat the process and go deeper into your subconscious to find the wisdom inherent in the energy of confusion. This is one way of making the most out of your natural states of confusion, which are unmanifest potentials. Don’t cheat yourself by scrambling for the lights!
